I’m sure you’ve heard that being a firefighter is the greatest job in the world. If you’re not a firefighter and you feel that way about your job, then hats off to you. Here’s some reasons why I feel that way about my job.
1. I Wanted It. I Asked For It. I Got It!
In 2016, I was working as a Route Delivery Driver for a bottled water company. I was making decent income. There was about 20-30 hours overtime every week, and payday was every Friday. I didn’t have to sit in an office (I find that a plus). It was physically demanding, so I stayed in good shape. And I got to drive a truck around five to six days a week, every “big boy’s” dream. However, I was bored and I felt unfulfilled. At this season in my life, I wanted something more meaningful, but I couldn’t quite put my finger on it. One day, I sat, literally crying to God in my truck about how grateful I was for my job, but also how bored I was and that I wanted more. I wanted something exciting, something that had a greater satisfaction and fed my soul as an individual. After that prayer, about a week later, I got a call from the fire department (I had taken the test in 2014, though it was pretty much put out of my mind at that time) and about a week after that, I was being sworn in. I had no idea what I was praying for or what I was in for, but the prospect of being able to make a difference in people’s lives everyday, and saving people, and risking my life to save someone else’s is totally worth it. In my opinion, it’s the ultimate work experience.
2. I Excel At It.
I am very thankful to see how much I’ve been able to grow as an individual in my career. I am glad, that I get to work with police, EMTs, paramedics and city officials to make my city a safe place. I’ve developed a new found respect for police and EMS and what they do, and I honor them for it. By nature, I’m drawn to athleticism and danger, and I seem to thrive whenever there is danger, training, and a need for courage that culminates on a daily basis to achieve the improbable. I enjoy seeing my training, character and skills come together to mold me into someone who is able to serve my community better. I enjoy interacting with the public regularly in attempts to “make their day” letting them know we’re here to serve them, whether it’s a smile, a greeting, a wave from the truck to the kids, or something done solely out of duty. It’s the ultimate work experience!
“A person can do nothing better than to eat and drink and find satisfaction in their own toil. This too, I see, is from the hand of God…” – Ecclesiastes 2:24 (NIV)
To this day, I haven’t stopped thanking God for my job which I enjoy so much. Whenever I think of or read this Scripture, I always think to myself “That’s me.”
